TRUSTING YOURSELF TO TRUST BIRTH

Wholistic Belief System:

  • Birth works.
  • Babies do come out.
  • "Birth is as safe as life gets." -Harriet Hartigan
  • The body has a wisdom and knows how to birth.
  • There is an inherent wisdom in each woman - to know how to birth her baby.
  • "A Mother's body knows how to grow a baby and knows how to birth. Labor can stop and start, follow its own rhythms of speeding up and slowing down." -Robbie Davis-Floyd
  • The mother delivers the baby.
  • You already know how to birth your baby.
  • Each woman is unique and each birth equally unique. It is part of the perfect plan to give birth.

Medical Model Belief System:

  • "Pregnancy is a medical condition." -Suzanne Arms
  • "Birth is too dangerous and risky to let it occur naturally." -Suzanne Arms
  • "It doesn't matter what kind of birth it was, you have a healthy baby." -Suzanne Arms
  • Birth is unsafe.
  • We have to control birth.
  • Why should women have to suffer the pain of childbirth.
  • "Birth is normal, natural and inherently dangerous." -Robbie Davis-Floyd
  • "Birth can be an emotionally satisfying experience for the woman as long as the emotional needs of the mother don't interfere with fetal safety." -Robbie Davis-Floyd
  • "Pregnancy and birth is inherently pathological." -Robbie Davis-Floyd
  • "Adhering to time charts in labor is essential for safety." -Robbie Davis-Floyd
  • "Labor pain is problematic, unacceptable." -Robbie Davis-Floyd
  • Some medical intervention is necessary in all birth.
  • The physician delivers the baby.
  • "Our prevailing paradigm views birth as a 'medical condition' that must be controlled and managed to 'safely' and efficiently 'deliver' a 'product' called a baby from a 'vessel' called a mother." -Suzanne Arms
